Baseball America on Tech

If this is accurate, the Jackets may only lose Bard, Farmer, and Thomas – far less damaging than 2011. I agree with what they say about Sam Dove and Kyle Wren – both would be improved players with another year (or two in Wren’s case). I guess the two recruits would have to decide whether it’s worth foregoing a college chance for 300 range draft slots. I was really interested in watching an interview with FSU’s James Ramsey during their regional as he explained his reasons for coming back as a senior – very admirable. It doesn’t appear to have hurt him at all. I guess I’ll have to pull for FSU to uphold the ACC.

  • I guess Kyle Wren is a special case given he would have some excellent advice coming from his father.

  • Congrats to Luke Bard for doing a whole lot better than the projection.

  • Wow, these projections aren’t turning out to be very accurate. Very unfortunate for Buck Farmer in particular, although I won’t be sad to see him back for his senior year if that’s what he decides to do.

  • In defense of Baseball America, they couldn’t have anticipated how this new version of the draft was going to play out. Sounds like a number of picks from the back end of the first 10 rounds would not have gone there a year ago, but they will sign for less than slot. Some clubs may use that money to go over slot on a talented, tough to sign player from the early rounds. Some may use it for guys taken after the budget first 10 rounds. I’m really interested to see what the Athletics do after taking Matt Gonzalez in the 11th round. I’m sure he will be offered more than the basic $100k. In Tech’s favor, we haven’t had a high school player pass on college for less than $420,000 in this century.

    • Thanks for the analysis. Do you know what – if anything – Tony Plagman and Jeff Rowland gained in bonus by returning for another year after being drafted in 2009? Your page doesn’t have “June Draft Status” figures for 2010.

  • Plagman got $35,000 as a senior in 2010. As a 19th round pick, Rowland’s bonus was not announced. He could have come back for his senior season in 2011.

    • Are you surprised that Sam Dove didn’t get drafted at all? I am after seeing some of the fantastic plays he made in the ACC tournament. He made too many errors all year, but seems to have the talent both in the field and the plate. 3rd may not be his natural position, but he was all we had this year. I will be glad to see him back in 2013. If all the Jackets lose turns out to be Brandon Thomas and Luke Bard, they will have the “least hurtful” draft in quite a while. Five possible starters for the mound, not even counting any new freshmen, plus a nearly intact infield and outfield. Could be a very good year.

      • I’ve liked Dove since I first heard about his intentions to come to Tech, but in a way, I’m not surprised he went undrafted. I think academically-oriented kids scare the scouts 🙂

  • The news that Kyle will be coming back is about the least surprising thing I’ve heard in a while. I also understand your somewhat tongue in cheek point about Dove, but Jacob Esch was drafted, and I recall him being a pretty serious student. I was actually surprised he didn’t come back having read about his studies, but don’t know him personally.

  • I’m sure $200,000 (plus money to finish school) helped to convince Esch. And it was only because they wanted him to pitch that he had that kind of offer put in front of him.
