If I remember, Deck MaGuire was considered more of a “sure thing” than Brandon Cumpton. Taking nothing away from Deck, who may have a long and successful career, Brandon seems to have surprised some folks.
Do you think Palka has what it takes to get to the bigs? He’s got a lot of power but will his batting average suffice? Same question with Skole. He was real good until that surgery and I now wonder if he’ll make it back.
The Nationals seem to understand where Skole is in coming off the injury. I think he will at the very least make the Majors as a September call-up at some point — though hard to say if that will happen this year. Some of it also depends on how the Nationals eventually sort out LaRoche/Zimmerman/Rendon, etc.
Palka has a shot although the Midwest League is a loooonnnng way from the Majors right now.

Kudos to Brandon and kudos to the Pirates development staff.
