GOFFENA, BAKKER LIFT TECH OVER CLEMSON 5-3

CLEMSON, S.C. - Derik Goffena went 3-for-3 with two RBI and freshman Kyle Bakker pitched eight strong innings to lead seventh-ranked Georgia Tech (31-12, 10-8 ACC) to a 5-3 victory over No. 12 Clemson on Sunday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Yellow Jackets' victory avoided a three-game sweep by the Tigers.

Bakker (3-0) picked up his third consecutive victory in as many starts after scattering seven hits and one walk over eight innings. Bakker allowed three runs, all of which were unearned, and struck out four batters.

Jeff Watchko tossed a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his sixth save of the season.

With the score knotted at 3-3, Tech scored two runs with two outs in the fifth inning. Bryan Prince led off the inning with a walk and took second base on Matt Murton's single to right field. A sacrifice bunt from Jason Perry advanced the runners. After Jason Basil struck out for the second out of the inning, Goffena laced a two out single to left field to drive in Prince and Murton.

Tech jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning after Basil singled and scored on Matthew Boggs' RBI single. Clemson bounced back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third thanks to two Yellow Jacket errors and a RBI single from Casey Stone.

The Yellow Jackets retook the lead at 3-2 with two runs in the top of the fourth. Wes Rynders drove in Goffena with a RBI single, while Boggs, who walked, scored on Chad Coder's throwing error. Clemson knotted the score at 3-3 in the bottom of that inning with a two-out RBI single from Seth Miller.

Goffena, who also walked, reached base safely in all four of his plate appearances. Basil added two hits in the game for the Yellow Jackets who got seven hits from the bottom four men in the batting order.

Clemson reliever Nick Glaser (4-2) took the loss after allowing two runs in 3.2 innings of work.

Georgia Tech will next host Georgia on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Russ Chandler Stadium. The game will be televised on Fox Sports Net South and broadcast on WREK Radio (91.1 FM in Atlanta).
